Learning New Languages.

“To learn a new language is to aim for a way of communicating that can open our horizons.”

It would be amazing to learn every language that exists, but starting with one at a time may be a good way to start.

I happen just to know Spanish because it is my mother language and English because in my country we are very influenced by it and also it is one of the more expanded and implemented languages. So now living in the United States for almost 5 years I am glad to announce that I love speaking and communicating in English.

But what are the things that I love about my native language? Well I love that I was raised learning Spanish. I heard people saying that Spanish is more difficult to learn that English. I don’t know if that is true exactly but I am happy to be able to have Spanish as my mother language. There are more than 400 million native Spanish speakers, making it second only to Chinese in terms of the most spoken languages in the world. English is just behind Spanish, with approximately 360 million native speakers. I love that there are a lot of countries where Spanish is their main language. Like Cuba (where I was born) with an estimated 2019 population of 11.33 million, Cuba is the 77th most populous country in the world. Also Mexico one of the countries with the highest population in the world with 132,328,025 habitants by now approximately. Here in United States from an approximately population of 329,093,110 habitants more than 41 million people speak Spanish as a first language (about 13% of the population), and that number continues to grow. Additionally, the U.S. is home to nearly 12 million bilingual Spanish speakers.

(Statistic from Google.)

I am also very happy to be able to understand English so I can share what I love with you and encourage you to learn a second or a third or a fourth or a…, ( well, you get me,) so you can be prepared if you want to visit those places that you dream about. I love also that I can bring my Spanish mojos to English speakers to enrich the language.

I can tell by experience that when we focus really in learning something that contributes to our future, we do, so don’t even worry too much if you feel stuck beacuse you want to speak a new language, you will. It all flows much better when we instead of worry, we occupy our minds with what we enjoy and what makes us happy about learning new exiting things.

For a start, to know any language we can listen to the music of that culture. Through music we can learn a lot. Being influenced by the things we are watching or listening in that language makes us resonate more in the frequency in which those native speakers communicate and express. Art is a great way for crossing frontiers. Like movies for example, watching movies that you like with subtitles helps me to understand it better.

For me, I did not understand most of the words watching movies in English because I did not get the pronunciation. Then I decided instead of Spanish subtitles (the ones I was used to) to use English subtitles and that way I could hear some of the pronunciations I was missing. When you like the culture you will start learning everything you love about it. For me it all started by listening to the music and putting attention to the movies that I was watching from the English culture the same that captivated my attention since I was little.

“To learn a language, learn to love the culture by engaging with it.”

There are many ways to engage with people that speak that language that you would like to learn, if they are natives better yet. You may learn more about that culture by engaging deeper into their roots and manners. What makes that country interesting? What captivates your attention about a region? Which parts of the world will you like to be in and understand the people and how they progress? But most important is that you have a sincere love for all people. This will help you immensely always in all ways. Because you attract what you give out. You attract what you are. So if you find already a country that you will like to visit have all these things in mind and also remember and be confident that we are one and there are no languages that can separate us in reality.

Finding support in people that share our same desires to engage in a new language is great. You can share with them yours and vice versa, playing with words and pronunciations. And if you visit or you find yourself living in that place were they speak the language that you want to learn, as well as if you want to work there, certainly, something that will help with your learning is meeting new people to share conversations. And eventually that will happen.

Like for me I always wanted to connect very deeply and to share things with someone native of the language I am learning ( thing that is very rare to happen because I am not openly talkative) but thank God I am glad I did. Anyone no matter how shy, can do it too. It’s serving me in all possible ways. So that is something I will like you to do. It is, I will say, the most important thing to do. Because if you really care about someone, you will be giving all of your attention to share in their language and make you understandable to them and their relatives too.

Connect in those ways in your love relationship, your friendships, work environment, neighborhood and all networks and that will take you to the next level in so many ways.

Reading books or blog posts like this will help you too 🙂 and also writing them.

It’s important to recognize technology, this days is very helpful with pretty much everything. We have built a world base on this. Accessing to it opens more possibilities for us. Communication is fundamental for us. Fortunately there are ways in which technology help us to learn a language. We apply it, for example when we want to learn the meaning of a word and we use Google. When we want to send the correct text, to write sentences grammatically correct, our phones have autocorrection of words in their system. Thanks this we can create meaningful things to share about our own perspective in life. And we learn as we go.

Today we have the capability to communicate with every person in the world, short and long distances, and to travel faster. Which means the more open we are to learn the more we open ourselves to new experiences. Using the tools in our hands makes it easier to work, and to share with the world.

Today information is there available to almost everyone. And it will help us to learn a language. I like to use Google translator when I don’t know how to write or say a word. You can access to an unlimited source of images, knowledge, websites, networks and more just by having access to the internet and a good device to allow you to do so. There are also apps like Duolingo and websites like Verbling that can help you learn languages, and there are always people who will help you in your journey. Schools are an effective way that you may already know but as I said there are a lot of ways to learn effective as you go.

Giving yourself the chance to go places and to prove your language skills with strangers is a big test. You can demonstrate your abilities. It is important to consider. They might be just as exited as you to SHARE.

“It matters if you just don’t give up.”

*And Remember:

‘Be kind with every being’

‘It’s through culture that we’re formed’

Your smile is a sign of gratefulness.

I am happy to share with you what has served me in this journey, and I hope it will serve you well.

Thanks.

God Bless.

Best always, Keila.
